The Port that Guards an Untouched Ocean
Nacala is one of the most fascinating cities in northern Mozambique — a rare combination of economic power and untouched natural beauty. Its deep-water port is considered the largest natural port in Africa, able to receive the world's largest ships without dredging. But it is beyond the port that Nacala reveals its true gem.
Nacala Bay and its surrounding beaches are among the most beautiful in the entire Indian Ocean — turquoise waters of extraordinary clarity, fine white sand and coral reefs just metres from the shore. A coastline that mass tourism has yet to discover.
What to See and Do
Fernão Veloso Beach
The most famous beach in the Nacala region. A sheltered bay with calm shallow waters, ideal for families and for first-time snorkellers. The white sand stretches for several kilometres with palm trees providing natural shade. There are seafood restaurants and small guesthouses along the shore.
Relanzapo Beach
Less well known than Fernão Veloso but just as stunning. A wilder beach with less infrastructure — ideal for those seeking seclusion and pure nature. The waters are crystal clear and the coral reefs are just metres from the beach.
Diving and Snorkelling
The Nacala coast has some of the best dive spots in northern Mozambique. The bay's outer reefs have coral walls at 10–25 metres deep, with turtles, rays and dense shoals of fish. The province has 5 certified dive centres: Coral Lodge (Mossuril), Kwalala Lodge, Libelula Lodge, Ossimba Beach Lodge (Nacala Porto) and Nuarro Lodge (Memba).
🐬 Dolphin and Whale Watching
The Nacala coast is one of the best places in Mozambique for dolphin and humpback whale watching. Whale season runs from June to November. Local dive centres organise dedicated trips to observe them.
Nacala International Airport
Nacala has a modern international airport — the newest in Mozambique — able to handle intercontinental flights. It is an alternative gateway to Nampula for visitors to the north of the country, with direct connections to several African destinations.
Port of Nacala
Nacala's deep-water port is a spectacle in itself. The sight of cargo ships entering the bay at dawn, with the mountains behind, is one of the city's most striking images. Organised port visits are available through local operators.
Mossuril District — The Historic Coast
A few kilometres from Nacala, Mossuril District holds a collection of historic and natural attractions of rare quality:
- Palace of the Governors-General in Cabaceira Grande — imposing colonial ruins by the sea
- Church of Our Lady of Remedies — in Cabaceira Grande, one of the oldest colonial churches in the region
- Church of Our Lady of the Conception — in Mossuril, with the historic Slave Ramp nearby
- Neutel de Abreu House — a colonial building of great architectural value
- Vasco da Gama's Well — a historic site linked to the Portuguese navigator's passage
- Coral Lodge — one of the best eco-lodges in Mozambique, with a certified dive centre
Gastronomy
Nacala is a paradise of fresh seafood. Chargrilled tiger prawns are the house speciality — served with lemon and piri-piri, with a cold beer by the sea, it is one of the most memorable food experiences in northern Mozambique. Swordfish, octopus and lobster complete the offer of the seafront restaurants.
