The Purest Indian Ocean in East Africa
The Nampula coast stretches for 460 km from Moma District to Memba District, with 51 catalogued beaches and 16 coastal islands — the vast majority still without any tourist infrastructure. That means beaches where the only footprints in the sand are yours.
The coral reefs off the Nampula coast are among the most intact in the entire western Indian Ocean. The absence of intensive fishing and mass tourism has preserved underwater ecosystems of extraordinary richness, with corals in perfect health and marine biodiversity that surprises even the most experienced divers.
Best Beaches
Fernão Veloso Beach — Nacala
The most famous and best-equipped in the region. A sheltered bay with calm waters, fine white sand and palm trees providing natural shade. Perfect for families and for anyone seeking comfort without giving up wild beauty. There are a few restaurants and small guesthouses along the shore.
Chocas Beach — Island of Mozambique
10 km from the Island of Mozambique, on the mainland, this beach combines white sand of rare beauty with a direct view of the island and the Fortress of São Sebastião. One of the most photogenic sunsets in all of northern Mozambique.
Moma and Angoche Beaches
At the southern end of the Nampula coast, the beaches of Moma and Angoche districts are practically deserted. Sand stretching for kilometres without a single building in sight. For travellers seeking absolute seclusion, this is where they will find it.
💡 Diver's Tip
The best underwater visibility is between June and September, when it can exceed 20 metres. Outside this season, the rains reduce visibility to 8–12 metres — still excellent for snorkelling but less ideal for deep diving.
Diving and Snorkelling Spots
The Nampula coast has spots for every level — from surface snorkelling in shallow waters to technical diving along coral walls at 30+ metres deep.
Fernão Veloso Bay
Calm shallow waters, colourful coral at 2–5m. Ideal for snorkelling and first dives.
Nacala Outer Reef
A coral wall at 10–20m with turtles, rays and dense shoals. Excellent visibility.
Quirimbas Walls
Vertical coral walls at 20–40m with pelagic life, reef sharks and giant gorgonians.
South Island of Mozambique
A historic reef with anchors and colonial artefacts — cultural snorkelling unlike anywhere else in the world.
What to Bring
- Your own snorkelling gear — local rental is scarce and of variable quality
- Biodegradable sunscreen — so as not to harm the corals
- Underwater camera — the marine biodiversity is world-class
- Towel and water — the most remote beaches have no services at all
- Insect repellent — at the end of the day on coastal beaches
Dive Operators
There are certified dive operators in Nacala and on the Island of Mozambique. They offer PADI courses, equipment hire and guided trips to the best spots on the coast. We recommend booking ahead in high season (July–September).
