Adventure & Ecotourism

Trekking on Mount Namuli, safari in the Niassa Reserve and kayaking through the northern archipelagos.

A Land of Untouched Adventure

Nampula province offers a rare combination: wild coastline, sacred mountains and one of Africa's largest wildlife reserves — all within a few hours of the city. For travellers looking to escape mass tourism and immerse themselves in genuine nature, this is the right destination.

With 81,606 km² of territory, the diversity of landscapes is extraordinary. From the coral coast to the mountainous interior, through miombo woodland and floodplains, every district of Nampula offers a different experience to the adventurer willing to explore.

Mount Namuli — The Sacred Peak

At 2,419 metres high, Mount Namuli is Mozambique's second highest peak and one of the most impressive trekking destinations in East Africa. It lies about 140 km south-west of Nampula city, in Gurúè District.

For the Macua people, Namuli is sacred — it is believed that this is where the first human being came down to earth. This spiritual dimension gives the climb a depth that goes far beyond the physical challenge. It is common to find ritual offerings along the paths and by the springs at the summit.

The Climb

The main route starts from the town of Gurúè and takes 6 to 8 hours to climb, depending on pace and fitness. The trail crosses tea plantations (Gurúè is famous for its tea), cloud forests and finally the rocky escarpment of the summit.

⛰️ Practical Information

Hiring a local guide in Gurúè is mandatory — as well as supporting the community, the guides know the paths and the protocols for respecting the sacred land. The climb requires no technical equipment but does demand good fitness and sturdy trekking shoes.

Niassa Reserve — Remote Safari

The Niassa Reserve is one of the largest conservation areas in Africa — 42,000 km² of wilderness stretching across Niassa province, with its buffer zone reaching northern Nampula. It is home to one of the largest elephant populations on the continent, as well as lions, leopards, buffalo and hundreds of bird species.

Unlike the South African and Kenyan parks, the Niassa Reserve receives very few visitors a year — which means safari experiences with no other vehicles in sight, in landscapes that look straight out of a documentary from 50 years ago.

Gurúè Tea Plantations

Gurúè, the town closest to Mount Namuli, is also the heart of Mozambique's tea industry. The Gurúè tea plantations cover the mountain slopes with an emerald-green carpet that is an extraordinary sight in itself.

You can visit the processing factories and learn the whole process — from leaf to cup — while enjoying one of Africa's most unusual landscapes: tropical mountains covered in tea at over 700 metres above sea level.

What to Bring

  • Trekking shoes — a must for Mount Namuli and inland trails
  • Light raincoat — the weather in the mountains changes quickly
  • Binoculars — essential for birdwatching and safari
  • Insect repellent — especially in the rainy season
  • Hat and sunscreen — the tropical sun is strong even in the mountains
  • Enough water — the most remote trails have no supply points
