Events in Nampula
Traditional festivals, craft fairs, Macua celebrations and cultural events that reveal the most authentic soul of northern Mozambique.
A Province Always Celebrating
Nampula province has one of the richest and most vibrant cultures in Mozambique. The Macua people — the largest ethnic group in the north — keep alive traditions of dance, music, crafts and ritual that have endured for centuries.
Throughout the year, traditional festivals, craft fairs and community celebrations bring Nampula city and the coastal districts to life. Attending one of these events is one of the most authentic ways to discover the true soul of this province.
From the Tufo dance of the coastal Islamic communities to the Nampula Music Festival, and the Macua craft fairs on the Island of Mozambique — there is always a reason to celebrate.

Learn moreTufo — Soul of the Coast
Tufo is much more than a dance — it is the identity of Nampula's coastal Islamic communities. Performed exclusively by women, with goatskin drums and chants in Kiswahili and Emakhwa, Tufo celebrates the most important moments of community life.
Born on the Island of Mozambique more than 300 years ago under Arab and Swahili influence, Tufo spread along the entire Nampula coast — from Angoche to Memba. Each community has its own group, costumes and melodies, making every performance unique.
The best chance to see it is during the Islamic festivals — especially Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan — or during the Coastal Tufo Festival in June, when groups from all along the coast gather in friendly competition.
